Bruce David ‘Moose’ Dewar

ESCANABA, Mich. — Bruce David “Moose” Dewar, age 69, of Escanaba passed away September 20, 2023. Bruce was born on May 21, 1954 to Floyd and Mary (Richard) Dewar in Grand Island, Nebraska. They later moved to Escanaba, where Bruce spent most of his childhood. He graduated from Escanaba High School in 1972.

Bruce and Sandy (Winner) married on August 28, 1976 in a small, intimate ceremony in Midland, Mich. They had children Nicole and David before moving back to the Upper Peninsula, where they made a permanent home and welcomed their second son, Michael.

Bruce was known for being a hard-worker. He received his accounting degree from Western Michigan University in 1976, and went on to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). In 1981, Bruce started with Schneider, Larche, Haapala and later became a partner in the company, where he served his loyal clients and business community for 42 years.

Outside of the office, Bruce enjoyed cooking for his family and golfing (a plaque memorializing a golf cart “incident” he and his brother Mike were involved in can be found on the 13th hole at the Terrace Bluff Golf Course). He was a dedicated fan of the Cleveland Indians and Browns, and spent many hours in his chair reading spy novels while sipping on a glass bottle of Coca-Cola. A natural recluse, Bruce enjoyed his solitude but was known by his people as loving and generous with a dry and witty sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy Dewar of Escanaba; daughter, Nicole (Eric) Dewar-Braun; son, Michael (Kelsie) Dewar; daughter-in-law, Amy Marcotte; grandchildren, Gabriel, Anya, Evelyn, Enrick, Isla and Arlo; siblings, Richard (Lynn) Dewar; Sue (Bill) Guinn; Mike (Renee) Dewar; Pat (Shirley) Dewar; and Terri Dewar MacKenzie; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Bruce was preceded in death by his son, David Dewar; parents, Floyd and Mary Dewar; and sister-in-law, Sue Dewar.

A Celebration of Life gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 28 at the Escanaba Yacht Club. The service will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the light hors d’oeuvres will follow. The Anderson Funeral Homes of Escanaba and Gladstone are assisting the Dewar family with the arrangements and online condolences can be sent to the family at www.andersonfuneralhomes.net
