Mary Lee DeGrand

ESCANABA — Mary Lee DeGrand, 88, of Escanaba, passed away on Monday, June 19, 2023 at OSF St. Francis Hospital.

She was born on November 26, 1934 in Gladstone, the daughter of Leeland and Helen (Cook) Mackie. Mary Lee was raised in Gladstone and graduated from Gladstone High School in 1951.

On October 11, 1958 Mary Lee married Richard Henry DeGrand at All Saints Church in Gladstone. He preceded her in death on January 4, 2008.

Mary Lee previously worked as a bookkeeper for Harnischfeger, and later for the People’s Drug Store until her retirement.

She enjoyed acting and singing with Players de Noc for over 40 years, and was also a member of St. Anne’s Church and the Coffee Mates Quartet. Mary Lee spent a lot of time volunteering in the community and enjoyed charity work. She also enjoyed gardening and birdwatching. She was the epitome of grace, beauty, and was a significant role model and source of joy to all that had the pleasure to know and love her.

Listed among survivors are her children, David Alan DeGrand of Green Bay and Thomas Richard (Tammy) DeGrand of Escanaba; grandchildren, Leah (Michael) Miller, Brittany (Steven) Czechowicz, and Jacob (Charity) DeGrand; and great-grandchildren, Caleb, Nova, Henry, Ethan, Joshua, Asher, and Ivy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leeland and Helen Mackie; husband, Richard DeGrand; son, Michael DeGrand; and sister, Sharon Mackie.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The funeral service will immediately follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating.

Burial will follow the funeral service and take place in Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone.
