Gerald Marvin Rhode
CARNEY – Gerald Marvin Rhode, 91 of Carney passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at the Marshfield Medical Center in Iron Mountain. Gerald was born on August 1, 1931 in Jam Dam to Florian and Dagmar Rhode. On September 18, 1954, Gerald married Hazel Victorene (Marie) Erickson at the Carney Evangelical Free Church. They were committed to each other working side by side in everything they did.
Gerald served in the Armed Forces in Korea just after the war. During this time, he was heavy equipment operator. He bulldozed an area for a new platoon to move in to Uijeongbu in Korea just north of Seoul. Gerald served in South Korea from May 1955 until being honorably discharged in February 1957.
He served his community and was on the Carney Village Board, the Village Water Board and the Carney-Nadeau School Board. He attended the Carney Evangelical Free Church where he served as a trustee for many years.
He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening, wild berry picking and camping with family and friends. A heartfelt thank you to Clayton Gustafson, for the friendship they shared and the many adventures they went on together. Also thank you to Melissa and Tom and the American Legion Cafe where Gerald would go for breakfast and order “the usual.” Thank you for watching out and taking care of him.
Gerald loved his family and spending time with them. He is survived by his children, Debbie (John) Moreau, Linda Rhode, Donald (Robyn) Rhode and Diane Rhode; brothers, Blaine (Gloria) Rhode and Allan Rhode; his sisters, Bernice Simmonetti and Betty (Darwin) Rhode; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Florian and Dagmar; wife, Hazel; brothers, Florian (Helen) Rhode, Hubert Rhode, Robert Rhode, Clifford (Carol) Rhode, Howard (Rosemary) Rhode, Raymond Rhode and Floyd Rhode; sister, Irene Rhode; sister-in-law, Carol Rhode; and brother-in-law, Johnny Simmonetti.
Visitation will be held at the Carney Free Church on Thursday, May 11, from 2 p.m. until time of military honors at 4:45 p.m. with funeral service to follow. Pastor Kit Bogan will officiate. Burial will follow in the Carney Free Church Cemetery.
