Dean A. Van Loon

GLADSTONE — Dean A. Van Loon, 67, of Gladstone (Flat Rock), passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at his home of natural causes.

He was born on May 29, 1955 in Ludington, Mich., son of Derral A. and Alice A. (Hoch) Van Loon. Dean was raised in Ludington and graduated from Ludington High School in 1973. He continued his education at Michigan Tech University and earned his bachelor degree in civil engineering. Following his graduation he moved to Vulcan, Mich. and began his career.

On June 26, 1999, Dean married the former Susan “Sue” Kay Watters in Vulcan, Mich.

For 43 years Dean worked at Champion, Inc. in Vulcan. He was the vice president of the National Concrete Division and traveled the country for his job before his retirement in 2020.

Dean and his wife, Sue, moved to Flat Rock in 2019 eager to enjoy their retirement years in their new home and the beautiful countryside. He was an outdoorsman who loved gardening, four-wheeling, side by side riding, fishing, boating, bird watching, and bee keeping. When his daughter, Lilly, played softball he enjoyed coaching her team. Dean was always working on projects and enjoyed tinkering in his garage. He was so proud of his children and their individual accomplishments. As a fellow-alumni, Dean beamed with pride because of Lilly’s graduation from Michigan Tech.

Dean was chairman of the Escanaba Township Planning Commission and a member of the Escanaba Township Zoning Board of Appeals.

Dean was a beloved husband, father, and friend to all.

Among survivors include his wife, Susan of Gladstone; children, Jason Leggitt of Escanaba, Christian Van Loon of Iron Mountain, and Lilly Van Loon of Marshfield, Wis.; and his beloved four legged “kids”, Ryder, Brody, and Stevie; two brothers, Derral and David Van Loon; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mark (Patty) Watters and Janice (Ian) Eliason-Williams; and other loving extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dean’s life will be celebrated in a private service that be held at the convenience of the family.
