STALWART, Mich. -- Dale Richard Carlson, age 75, of Stalwart, Michigan, died at home on March 17, 2023. He was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, on February 7, 1948, to William Oscar and Lois Margarette (Johnson) Carlson.
Dale grew up in Sault Ste. Marie and graduated from Sault Ste. Marie High School in 1966. He attended Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and was then drafted to the United States Army during the Vietnam War where he served in the 1st Cavalry for two years. He returned home in 1969 and worked with his dad and brothers building homes in Escanaba, Michigan. Dale then purchased the Welcome Inn tavern, joined Boilermakers Union Local #169 where he worked until his retirement in 2003 and welcomed his son, William in 1977. Dale moved to Stalwart, Michigan, in 1990, where he purchased his grandfather's farm with his brother, Chip. Together they farmed the land, raised cattle, and cut hay for many years.
Dale was a member of the Bender-Johnson Raber AMVETS and served on the board of directors for the Raber Area Sportsmen's Club and Cloverland Electric for 12 years.
Dale loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, baiting the deer on the farm, fishing, riding his four-wheeler, and spending time with his family and friends. In his retirement he loved spending time at his cottage on Lake Huron in Detour, Mich. Dale also loved sports and was a big Detroit Red Wings and Lions fan.
Dale is survived by his son, William (Deanna) Carlson of Pickford, Michigan; granddaughter, Kate Carlson; brothers, Donald (Cathy) Carlson of Escanaba, Kenneth Carlson of Florida, Jon Carlson of Florida, and Chip (Christine) Carlson of Sault Ste. Marie; and sister-in-law, Susie Carlson of Ford River, Michigan. He was also loved and survived by many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Dale is preceded in death by his parents, William and Lois Carlson; brother, Thomas Carlson; and infant twin brothers, William and Robert Carlson.
Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, March 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Galer Funeral Homes, in Pickford, Michigan. Memorial Service will follow at 12:30 p.m. and will include military funeral honors.
