Steven J. Shope

RAPID RIVER, Mich. — Steven J. Shope, 52, of Rapid River, passed away on December 2, 2022 at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids following a heart transplant.

Steven was born on August 12, 1970 in Escanaba, Michigan, to William F. Shope, Jr., and Mary (Howard) Shope. Steven graduated from Mid Pen Schools in 1989. Following graduation he worked many jobs until he found the career that was meant for him. He was a CNA at Christian Park Center for over 10 years. He will fondly be remembered by all of the residents and staff who had the privilege of working with him and who called him friend. He was so kind and generous to everyone he knew and he had a sense of humor that will never be forgotten.

Steven’s greatest joy in life were his children. He made sure their childhoods were filled with activities, joy and above all, love! There is nothing he wouldn’t do for them. He wanted to spend all of his time with them, especially throughout his courageous battle following his heart transplant.

He was an avid Detroit Lion’s and Detroit Redwings fan.

Steven is survived by his mother, Mary Broeders (Ron Bricker) of Rapid River; his five children, Ashley Shope (of Craig, Colorado), Kayleigh Shope (Escanaba), William Shope (of Escanaba), and Samuel Shope and Rhiannon Shope (both of Rapid River). He is also survived by his brothers, Tim (Lori) Shope, Casey (Kayla) Shope and Dusty (Lindsay) Shope ad his sister, Misty (Ryan) Gutleber.

His survivors also include his two granddaughters, Isabelle Hayes and Shailei Preston of Craig Colorado, his grandmother, Darlene Shope and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, William F. Shope, Jr., his paternal grandfather, William F. Shope, Sr., his maternal grandparents, Harry and Mary Howard and his son, Jacob Steven Shope.
