Gregory Don Olsen

Gregory Don Olsen

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Gregory Don Olsen, age 71, passed away peacefully in Green Bay, Wis. on July 23. Beloved husband of 50 years to Julie (Dani); loving and proud father to Danelle Kusmerz (Tom) and Luke (Gretchen); adoring “Gregpa” to his grandchildren, Jack, Paige and Kate Kusmerz and Will, Parker and Olivia Olsen; and cherished brother of Glenn, Gary and Gene (Colleen).

Greg was born on October 10, 1950, in Iron Mountain, Mich. to Irving and Wanda (Gross) Olsen. He spent his childhood years in the U.P. and earned his B.S. from Northern Michigan University. Upon graduation he followed in his father’s footsteps and pursued a career in the transportation industry where he would spend the majority of his 30+ year career. He traveled often for work and was known to deliver a hearty, “Hi, Hi, Hi!” when getting home to his family.

Ultimately, Greg will be remembered as a kind, generous and compassionate man who loved his family and friends deeply. We will cherish the memory of his many passions, which included spending time with his kids, playing catch with his grandkids, having a glass of red wine with a steak, playing racquetball, offering his famous driving tours to anyone visiting, skiing, his glorious kicking career for the Escanaba Eskymos undefeated football team, joking with his brothers, shooting the moon in a game of hearts, the Green Bay Packers and his belief that the Vikings are cheaters, playing pinochle at his in-laws in Hermansville, a great thin crust pizza, having a good laugh, a round of golf, family trips to his favorite place, Escanaba, and especially telling people how proud of his family he was.

Greg is also survived by in-laws, Marilie Koenigsknecht, John Dani (Mariella); his Aunt Carol Pryor; several amazing nieces and nephews and many cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, in-laws (John and Irma Dani), brother-in-law (Roy Koenigsknecht), two sister-in-laws (Debra and Judy Olsen) and niece (Meg Koenigsknecht).

We love him very much, are glad we made him proud and know he will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held in fall 2022 with details to follow.

Remembrances may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society, 115 N. 8th St., Escanaba, MI, in care of Barbara Van Ermen.
