Donald G. ‘Don’ Moody

ROCK — Donald G. “Don” Moody, 75, of Rock, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at UP Health System – Marquette.

He was born on March 27, 1947 in Kankakee, Ill., the son of Clifford and Bernice (Cleary) Moody. Don was raised in Kankakee and graduated from Bishop McNamara Catholic High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and was an officer in the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Eastern Illinois University.

In 1967, Don married the former Rebecca “Becky” Regnier in St. George, Ill. Together they shared almost 55 years of marriage.

Don worked for several years as a production supervisor/plant manager for Pepsi Cola Bottling in Detroit. In 1982, Don and his family relocated to Escanaba, where they purchased Gust Asp Party Store. In 1985, he opened Don’s Country Store in Rock, where the family moved a year later to raise cattle for the next 10 years. In 1994, Don and his wife opened Hereford & Hops Steakhouse and Brewpub and Delta Apartments in 1995.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Don enjoyed hobby farming and raising cattle, which allowed him to supply his restaurant with beef for many years. He was a hard worker who always had some sort of project going on.

Don was a member of St. Joseph Church in Perkins, where he also lectured, and was a member of the Rock Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Becky; son, Bret Moody of Escanaba; siblings, Maryann Richard of Florida, Patrick Moody of Pennsylvania, and Rebecca Yowell of Gladstone; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Cliff and Bernice Moody, Don was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael, in 1968; brother, Mark Moody, and brother-in-law, Lonnie Yowell.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 30 from 3 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday, March 31 from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S 13th St, Escanaba. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Perkins with Rev. William Ssozi officiating.

Hereford and Hops Restaurant will be closed on both Wednesday and Thursday so the employees can pay their respects to Don and the Moody family.
