Michael Robert Heminger

Michael was born in Escanaba, April 6, 1937 to Robert and Lorraine (Baillargeon) Heminger. He was raised in Escanaba and graduated from Escanaba High School in 1955. He was named to the All UP Basketball team in 1955. A friend said, “He was smart as a whip, great athlete, but just didn’t give a damn.” He was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He attended Michigan State University. Most of his career was spent working in California.

Michael was an avid golfer and a long time member of the Escanaba Country Club. There wasn’t a golf course he didn’t meet that he didn’t try. He enjoyed following all sports on his big screen.

Michael was a gentle soul, always had a ready smile, a twinkle in his eye, an intellectually dry sense of humor, and a story to tell. He will be greatly missed on this earth.

Michael is survived by the love of his life Joyce Shelvy of Mesa, Ariz.; son Matthew and grandson Tyler of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter, Michelle Heminger of San Jose, Calif., and niece and nephew Lisa and Bruce Hoeft of Cardiff-by-the Sea, Calif.

There will be no services per Michael’s request.

Honor the memory of Michael by being generous in words and deeds with those who make your life easier in everyday ways — the barber, postal carrier, the garbage man, etc. And by lifting up young people for whom a simple word of encouragement or congratulations may be the only one they receive.
