Richard ‘Dick’ Warren Hughson

MANISTIQUE — Richard “Dick” Warren Hughson, age 92, of Manistique, passed away peacefully in his sleep early Thursday morning, June 10, 2021, at the Schoolcraft County Medical Care Facility.

Dick was born in Manistique, on May 13, 1929, the son of Harold and Thelma (Archambeau) Hughson. He attended Manistique area schools. Dick enlisted in the United States Army, serving with the 6th Infantry from November 23, 1948 until August 5, 1952, and during the Berlin Airlift. He met his true love, the former Dorothy Mae Gagne, and they were united in marriage on April 25, 1953, in Spaulding, MI. Together they raised their five children in the Manistique area. Dorothy Mae preceded Dick in death on March 21, 2018.

Dick was employed as a machinist at Manistique Papers, and was a proud member and local representative of the Union Local 1832, Construction Millwright. He was a past member of the Manistique Jaycees and the Michigan National Guard. Dick enjoyed collecting and tinkering with old radios, woodworking and building. He liked going to car shows and was an antique car enthusiast, proudly taking his 1949 Cadillac to shows. He liked reading true crime and detective stories. Dick was the co-founder and first president of Manistique Federal Credit Union. He was deeply honored to be part of “The Greatest Generation.”

Dick is survived by his daughter; Deborah (Butch Vertz) Dougovito, of Manistique, his sons; Rick (Mary) Hughson, of Thompson, Mark Hughson, of Marathon, Wis., Randall Hughson, of Charleston, SC, Glenn (Kim) Hughson, of Parachute, CO, 11 grandchildren; Mandy Renk, Dawn Norman, Travis Hughson, Sarah Leist, Steven Hughson, Ryan Hughson, Amber Hughson, Glenn Hughson, Jesse Hughson, Russell Hughson, James Hughson and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife Dorothy Mae, son in law; Michael Dougovito, brothers; Jack Hughson, Raymond Hughson, and Victor Hughson, sisters; Beda Cameron and Marilyn Henry.

Per Dick’s wishes, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
