Marlene M. (Ducheny) Sinnaeve

GLADSTONE, Mich. — Marlene M. (Ducheny) Sinnaeve, age 83, of Gladstone, died of natural causes on April 10, 2021 at Bishop Noa Home for Senior Citizens after a short illness. She had been living at Bishop Noa in Escanaba since November 2020.

Born July 26, 1937 in Escanaba, MI to Armand and Margaret (Mastdegh) Ducheny of Gladstone. Marlene was raised in Gladstone and was a lifelong resident. In 1955 she graduated from Gladstone Area High School. She also attended All Saints Grade School. After high school Marlene met and married Cyriel (Sonny) Sinnaeve on November 10, 1956, they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary a year ago last fall.

After high school, Marlene worked at Michigan Bell in Escanaba as a telephone operator. Later she worked for many years at the local neighborhood grocery store Dan’s, which later became Jim’s One Stop. She took a break from working to raise her three children. After they were grown, Marlene went back to work at the Log Cabin in Gladstone as the Salad Bar Chef. She enjoyed working there where she became friends with many people from customers to co-workers.

She retired in the early 90s where her and Sonny enjoyed retirement together. She loved spending time going to the family camp, enjoying family and cooking for the gang. She would send food and cook during Hunting season and would even spend a few days up there. She enjoyed the stories and even had some of her own. Marlene and Sonny did some traveling early in their retirement going to Olympia, Wash., to visit her sister, Diane, several times. One of the most talked about vacations was when they went on a road trip in the RV with all Sonny’s brothers and sisters on a circle tour of the country out west and the desert southwest.

Like Sonny, she loved her Detroit sports teams, rooting for the Lions, Tigers, Red Wings and NASCAR. She enjoyed family coming over every Sunday after church to have a big lunch/dinner that she would cook for all. And then watch sports and visit all afternoon.

Marlene was preceded in death by her Husband, Sonny one year ago. And is survived by her sister, Diane Zientek, of Puyallup, Wash.; brother, James (Gloria) Brassick of Gladstone; five sisters-in-law and brother-in-law; sons, Tom (Marie) Sinnaeve of Marquette, Steve (Mendy Kolbus) Sinnaeve of Rapid River and daughter, Kathy (Kenny) Mathers of Gladstone.
