Kathryn M. ‘Kay’ Perow-Ammel

ESCANABA -- Kathryn M. "Kay" Perow-Ammel, 74, of Escanaba, passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2021, at her daughter's home following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Escanaba on March 11, 1947, the daughter of Emil and Clara (Kleiman) Perow. Kay graduated from Holy Name High School in 1965 and attended college in DePere, Wis.

In 2001, she married Bernard Ammel in Escanaba.

Kay spent the majority of her years working in the business office at OSF St. Francis Hospital until her retirement. She took pride in tending to her flower beds. Kay always looked forward to traveling to music festivals with family and friends, old country music ran through her veins. She grew up with a love for the lake. Kay was fond of the water and enjoyed camping, fishing, and taking care of her pet ducks, who were her "loves". She was a member of the Northern Lights YMCA and the Escanaba Eagles. Kay loved to laugh, and it was infectious to those around her. Her family and friends were all gifted with her grace and strength.

Kay was a remarkable woman who was adored by all and never met a stranger. Her love and devotion to people, family, friends, and strangers alike was unmatched. When you heard her bold heartfelt laughter, you couldn't help smiling knowing Kay was in the room.

She held all her friends and family close to her heart and filled all of us with special memories of muffuletta, cheese cake, camp coffee, and oh my gosh the brownies. The Bands, flying birthday cake, bonfires, music festivals, rent-a-wreck, camping from Grand Marais to Milwaukee to Rhinelander and annual parties at the lake.

Kay will be missed, but her memories will live on as she left a piece of herself in all our hearts. Rest in peace. Until we meet again.

She is survived by her husband, Bernard Ammel of Escanaba; daughter, Nicole (fiancée, Nathan Kohnert) Perow of Escanaba; stepchildren, Jerry (Sandy) Ammel, Michael (Allison) Ammel, James Ammel, Lynn Hearl, and Jennifer Stanton; grandchildren, Anna, Gavin, Elizabeth, and Paige Kohnert; several great-grandchildren; one brother, James (Patricia) Perow; and special friend, Annie Dufour.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 29, at St. Anne Catholic Church from 2 to 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 4 p.m. with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating.

Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery.

A celebration of Kay's life will be held this summer, at a later date to be announced.
