Shirley Jean Larson

SHERWOOD, Wis. — Shirley Jean Larson – Mama was lifted into Heaven on February 21, 2021, after 72 years on earth.

She leaves behind the brokenhearted who loved her, including her children: Brent Larson, Kerrie Larson-Kerkman; Brandon Larson; and son on-law, Louis Kerkman, who was also a son to her. She has one grandson here on earth, Kaden Larson, and another who was waiting for her in Heaven, Tylor Matthews.

Others who are left behind include her sister Jo Cappella, who she loved so much and who has been an amazing sister to her, as well as Jo’s children, Richard and Andrew, and their families. She also leaves behind her cousin, Mary Sviland-Patterson, who Mama described as “a breath of fresh air”, as well as her two best friends who were unwavering in their love and presence, Jennifer Arndt and Annie Lux.

In the past year, she felt the love and support of many people. In particular, Ken Kelch gave her daily peace and reassurance as he tirelessly brought her to and from dialysis, going above and beyond and always being willing to navigate all kinds of conditions to help her feel safe.

To Pastor Kevin Kelly whose visits and time with her provided the peace and assurance she clung to in her final days.

She spent her early life in Escanaba, Michigan before marrying Elmer Larson and entering into a life of traveling with him and their young family. Later in life, she finished raising her children by working 15 years in a paper mill until she could retire.

No one could smile or fight like Mama and she did both with grace. She had a smile that came from her heart and radiated joy. Throughout her life, she never lost the ability to be delighted at the simple things. She loved her dog Roxy, her many grand puppies and grand kitties, and her special therapy dog Maggie. She loved watching her birdfeeders, taking drives, and flowers just as much as she loved being stubborn and sassy. She loved attending church and most of all she loved making others smile. She was unfailingly selfless and would sacrifice everything out of her love for others. She was an amazing mom and that’s what was most important to her.

She passed away with the peace and certainty that she was going to Heaven. Those who were already waiting for her in Heaven include her parents, Irwin and Ferne Sviland; her brother John Sviland; her brother-in-law, Andrew Cappella; and her beloved grandson, Tylor Matthews. We know they are reunited in Heaven.

A memorial service for Shirley will be held on Saturday, February 27, at 1 p.m. at Christ the Rock Church, W6254 Hwy 10-114, Menasha WI. Friends and family will be received at church from 11 a.m. until the hour of service.
