Jeanette M. ‘Jean’ DeGrand

ESCANABA — Jeanette M. “Jean” DeGrand, 92, of Escanaba, passed away early Monday morning, February 8, 2021, at Bishop Noa Home following a recent hip surgery a week earlier.

She was born in Escanaba on April 1, 1928, the daughter of Nicholas and Mary (Warshana) Chernick. Jean was raised in the Ford River/Hyde area until her early teen years and attended the Ford River/Hyde schools until her family moved to Bark River. Jean graduated from Harris High School, class of 1947.

On, August 28, 1948, Jean married Arthur J. “Art” DeGrand. Together they started multiple business ventures together. Along with Art, Jean was very involved in in their businesses on a daily basis doing the bookkeeping and secretarial work. In 1988, she and Art built Oak Bluff Estates Mobile Park, Royal Oak Subdivision, and South Hill Storage.

Jean enjoyed baking and cooking for family, gardening, and oil and watercolor painting. She found her most enjoyment with spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Shelia (Allen) Hansen of Escanaba; son, Rod (Gloria) DeGrand of Escanaba; sister, Olga DeGrand; brother, David (Linda) Chernick; grandchildren, Corey (Sarah) Hansen, Brad (Kelly) Hansen, Jason (Trisha) DeGrand, Jamie (Vicki) DeGrand, Jeremy (Stephanie) DeGrand, and Joe DeGrand; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur “Art” DeGrand; sisters, Helen Ryan, Ann Pinozek, and Barbara Phalen; brothers, Nicholas, John, and Wesley Chernick.

A public Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Anne’s Church on Thursday, February 11, at 3 p.m. with Father Fran DeGroot officiating.

For the past three years Jean has been blessed to be able to live in her home cared for by wonderful and compassionate caregivers 24/7. The family would like to thank them all for their love, concern, and many talents in caring for mom.

Burial will take place in the spring in Holy Cross Cemetery.
