ESCANABA — Clarence R. Seymour, 80, of Escanaba, passed away at his home following a lengthy illness with his children, Dale and Dianna, and son-in-law, Joseph Kolich, by his side on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.
He was born on August 4, 1940, in Escanaba, son of Lawrence A. and Elizabeth B. (Sape) Seymour. Clarence graduated from Escanaba High School and resided in Escanaba most of his life.
On October 20, 1962, Clarence married Jacqueline M. Taylor at Sacred Heart Church in Schaffer. She preceded him in death on March 31, 2020.
Clarence started working independently in his teens and shared many stories about earning his way by shoe-shining, selling his catch of the day, and taking on some construction projects while still in high school. One of his favorite jobs was when he sailed the Great Lakes prior to settling into being a first generation, self-employed contractor until his retirement. Many people worked with him over the years and one of his famous sayings while trying to keep construction projects flowing was, “Come on fellas, let’s hustle.” He had a strong will and never shied away from a challenge. He often said “If you never make a mistake then you’re not trying hard enough. Don’t worry about the mistakes, just learn from it and do better next time.” Along with his son, Dale, who worked in the family business for many years, they left their trademark on multiple residential and commercial properties throughout the Upper Peninsula.
While being a first-generation business owner left little free time, Clarence made the most of life and would squeeze in some fishing, hunting or just enjoying a family gathering at camp. He was generous with his time in helping others throughout his life. One of his greatest joys was his granddaughter, Alexis, and he took her on many adventures while growing up. She affectionately called him, “Gramps.”
In retirement, Clarence enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was passionate about taking care of the birds, rabbits and deer in his backyard. For a few summers, a Sandhill Crane family took a liking to Clarence and even recognized the sound of his truck. They would hurry back to greet him outside of his garage door.
Survivors include his children, Dianna Seymour (Joseph Kolich) and Dale Seymour both of Escanaba; granddaughter, Alexis Whitney (Jared Vucksan); brother, Charles (Mary) Seymour; sister, Jean Hansen; sister-in-law, Joann Seymour; several very special nieces and nephews, and a very good buddy, Tom Gladys.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Jacqueline; he was preceded in death by an infant son, William Seymour; two brothers, Lawrence and Gerald Seymour; and sister, Shirley Burger.
A graveside service will take place in the spring in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Schaffer with Deacon Mike LeBeau officiating. It will be followed by a celebration of his life held at the family camp in Whitney.
