Lawrence ‘Larry’ Emmet Curran

ESCANABA — Lawrence “Larry” Emmet Curran, 90, passed away at his home on Sunday, December 27, 2020.

He was born in Manistique, Mich. on October 20, 1930, the son of Arthur and Lillie (Anderson) Curran. Larry graduated from Manistique High School, then entered the United States Air Force in 1950. He served in the 1969th AACS Squadron until 1954, and received the National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.

Larry married Charlene Gardner, his high school sweetheart, in Manistique in February 1955. The couple moved to Marquette, Mich., where Larry attended Northern Michigan University and earned his bachelor degree.

Larry began a 34-year career in social services in 1959, first in Winona, Minn., then relocating to Escanaba in 1966. He retired in 1993 after 26 years as the Director of the Delta County Department of Social Services of Michigan.

Larry enjoyed golfing, going to hunting camp with friends (and maybe doing a little hunting while there), and many years singing with the Remnants Barbershop Chorus. He also loved camping with his wife and children, and going to Arizona during the winter. Larry was a great storyteller and entertained his children, grandchildren and others with chronicles of his life.

Survivors include his children, Colleen Curran of Lansing, Mich., Kevin Curran of Rock, Mich., Kelly (Brian) Wright of Shelby, Mich., and Shawn (Linda) Curran of Appleton, Wis.; grandchildren, Shannon Curran, Sean (Tamara) Curran, Shaylee Curran, Joshua (Sarah) Wright, Kelsey Wright, Hannah Wright, Jenny (Nicholas) Martzahl, and Christopher (Morgan) Curran; great-grandchildren, Keagan and Sasha Curran, Andi and Alex Martzahl, Cari Wright, and Asher Curran; and many nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Charlene; daughter, Laurie Ann Curran; sisters, Kay Jackson and Patricia Hough; and brothers-in-law, Joe Jackson and Lauritz Hough.

A public Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 2, at St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Timothy Ferguson officiating.

Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Manistique, MI.
