John A. ‘Jack’ Baker

ESCANABA — John A. “Jack” Baker, 89, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020, at UP Health System – Marquette.

He was born in Escanaba on June 8, 1931, the son of William and Janeve (Borrow) Baker. John graduated from St. Joseph High School and received his associate degree from Cloverland Commercial College.

John joined the United States Army after graduation and served from April 30, 1952 to March 1, 1954. He received the National Defense Service Medal.

On, June 19, 1954, John married Mary Valentine at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Escanaba.

John enjoyed spending time with his family, woodworking, gardening in his vegetable garden, going to the casino, traveling to visit his family, and playing cards. As a younger man, he enjoyed playing softball and was an excellent pitcher in his day. During his lifetime, he created many wonderful memories with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren that will live on in them for many years to come.

He is survived by his wife Mary; his children, Michelle (Dr. Michael) Connor, James D. (Erica) Baker, Catherine (Phil) Hurst, Julie (Daniel) Campbell, Paul Baker, and Patricia (Michael) Lawrence; his grandchildren, Gina (John) Harris, Linse DeCamp, Shannon (Marty) Bartoszek, Jesse Baker, Jason (Mary) Hurst, Kristin Hurst, Jena Campbell, Morgan Campbell, John (Anna) Baker, Joshua Lawrence, and Jared Lawrence; and ten great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents, William and Janeve (Borrow) Baker; son, Christopher Baker; brothers, Harold, Lloyd, LeRoy, James, and William Baker; and his stepfather John Wery.

Visitation and Mass of Christian Burial will take place privately for the family.

Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Holy Name High School Capital Campaign, 409 South 22nd Street, Escanaba, MI 49829.
