Mary H. Carlson

MANISTIQUE — Mary H. Carlson (Peppy), 97, of 724 Oak St., Manistique, Mich., died on April 3, 2020.

She was born Feb. 5, 1923, in Manistique, Mich., the daughter of John A. and Margaret (Barnes) Hoholik. Mary was a faithful member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Manistique. She was a 1936 graduate of St. Francis de Sales School and a 1940 graduate of Manistique High School. She went to the Ann Rose Moran Beauty College in Flint, Mich., and graduated in 1942. She was employed at Hilaker Beauty Shop in Flint, Mich., until 1945 returning to Manistique as owner and manager of Beauty Nook until 1955.

She married Sagwald A. Carlson on Oct. 20, 1951, in Manistique and together they raised a large family. She was a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters. She enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens, putting together jigsaw puzzles, and was an excellent cook and baker.

She is survived by her sons, John (Kathy) Carlson of Hobart, Wis., Frank (Penny) Carlson of Manistique, Mich., Mark Carlson of St. Ignace, Mich., Peter (Lisa) Carlson of Portsmouth, Va., Paul (Tammy) Carlson of Chesapeake, Va., and daughters Nancy Reynolds of Brighton, Mich., Barbara Carlson of Manistique, Mich., and Sally Ricks of Brighton, Mich.

She is also survived by 14 grandchildren (Rachel, Timothy, Joel, Mariel, Erin, Brynn, Jennifer, Erica, Stephen, Kyle, Alec, Abby, Emma, Andrew), six great-grandchildren (Will, Ellery, Clara, Jorgito, Lucia, Eva) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Sagwald (2007), her brothers Michael, John, Frank, Stephen, Anthony, Dominic James, Sylvester Peter, and son-in-law Albert Reynolds.

Mary’s family would like to thank her caregivers (Pam, Billie, Taylor, Alexis) who looked after her with kindness and compassion each day. Thank you also to the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospice team of Mary, Angie, Nicole and RN Aaron and Dr. Kusnier who supported Mary this past year.
