James P. ‘Jim’ ‘Sweetie’ Johnson

SPALDING — James P. “Jim” “Sweetie” Johnson, 41, of Spalding, passed away early Saturday morning, March 21, 2020 at his home with his loving family by his side. He fought a very courageous battle against a very aggressive and rare form of Lymphoma.

He was born on May 6, 1978, in Escanaba, son of John and Mary (Nelson) Johnson Sr. Jim was raised in Powers and graduated from North Central in 1996. He was a lifelong resident of the Powers/Spalding community.

On July 30, 2016, Jim married Jessica Anne Erickson at their home in Spalding. Together they were blessed with their daughter, Josie, who is two years old. Jim was a great supporter of his stepson, Landen, and loved being his youth football coach.

Jim was a master plumber who began his apprenticeship with Gary Eichhorn. He owned and operated his own business A+ Plumbing for several years before starting his career with Berger & King for the last 11 years. Jim was known for his wonderful customer service he provided.

He loved to golf and was an avid University of Michigan football fan.

Jim was a member of the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 111 and was a very active past member of the Delta County Jaycees.

Among survivors are his wife, Jessica; children, Landen Hansen and Josie Johnson, all of Spalding; father, John E. Johnson Sr. of Powers; brother, John E. (Peggy) Johnson Jr. of Powers; and sister, Jill (Dean) Chaffee of Chippewa Fall, Wis.; special aunt and cousin, Tami Frahm and Dave Fazer; nephew, Griffin; nieces, Morgan and Sarah; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Johnson on Feb. 20, 2016.

Due to the COVID 19 virus, private services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. A previously organized spaghetti dinner fundraiser, scheduled for May 3 will welcome Jim’s family, friends and community. This gathering of support for Jim and his family will take place at the Bark River Senior Center from 10:30 – 3 p.m. to honor and celebrate the life of Jim. If a change of date is necessary, notification will be made.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jim’s wife, Jessica and a scholarship will be established for their daughter Josie. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Jessica Johnson, c/o Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba, MI 49829.
