Dale Robert Soumis
OSHKOSH, Wis. — Dale Robert Soumis passed away March 5, 2020, surrounded by his family and special friend Eileen Clark.
He was born Aug. 2, 1947, in Hancock, Mich., a son of Eugene and Ella Soumis of Chassell, Mich. He grew up in Chassell and graduated from Chassell High School in 1966 and attended Michigan Technological University. In 1970 he earned a B.S. in biology (molecular microbiology, chemistry, physiology and pathology). He continued to earn a teacher certification 1974 and a B.S. in civil engineering 1977. Dale served in the Michigan National Guard and graduated from the Military Academy class of 1977. He retired as U.S. Army officer: major 1993. He served in 507th Corps of Engineers, Honduras 1986, Germany 1989. Other accomplishments include Gogebic College, Emergency Medical Technician Cert. 1981 and U.S. Coast Guard Master 100 Ton Captain License 2010. He achieved a career in city management in Chassell, Wakefield, Croswell, Gladstone, Williamston, Mich., and retired from the City of Antigo, Wis., in 2012.
On Aug. 2, 1981 he married Barbara and very lovingly took her two children, Dina and Elly, as his own children. Their son Jacques was born in 1982. In addition to scholastic and military achievements, Dale built two homes, raced sailboats throughout the Great Lakes competitively, and during his retirement sailed the world with his son. He loved to travel and share all his experiences with his loved ones, but his true love was sailing, and his favorite hobby was woodworking.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother Gary and brother-in-law Carl Olson.
He is survived by his children, Jacques Soumis, Dina Abts, Elly Brzezinski; their mother, Barbara Soumis; four grandchildren, Ashley, Emily, Chloe, Caden and special friend Eileen Clark; his siblings, Michael (Annie) Soumis, Sherry (Mike) Bishop, Paula Olson and his sister-in-law MaryLee Nordstrom; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Dale will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 16, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Chassell. Spring burial will be in the Chassell Cemetery.
Friends may call on Sunday, March 15, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. with a time for family and friends to share memories of Dale from 5:30 to 6 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Chassell. Friends may also call on Monday from 10 to 10:50 a.m. at St. Anne’s Catholic Church of Chassell.
