Victor John Sopina

RALEIGH N.C. — Victor John Sopina, 83, recently of Raleigh, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020. Vic was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He was born and raised in Escanaba, and was a 1956 graduate of Escanaba Senior High School. He was a Master Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy where he served his country for 26 years as a cryptologic technician. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for the United States Post Office as a letter carrier.

Vic spent many happy days in his workshop at his house in Pace, Fla., doing woodworking and completing repair projects. He traveled across the United States on his motorcycle and spent several years with his wife, Peggy, camping in their fifth-wheel trailer visiting friends and family. He loved running, where, in the Navy, he was known as “Run for Lunch Sopina.” While stationed at Pearl Harbor, he was commended by the Hawaiian Armed Services Police for his voluntary assistance in preventing a serious incident. He loved music, talking with his family and friends, and attending class reunions.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Hazel (Kromer) Deno and Victor Sopina, and his brother, Norman Sopina.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy (Smith) Sopina; daughter, Karen Sopina (Dale) Little; son, Victor Sopina; and three grandchildren, Shelby, Abigale, and Lucas Sopina, of Raleigh; sisters, Ramona V. Larson, Kathleen Grontkowski, Judith (James) Westphal, and Janielle (Michael) Price, of Wisconsin; and sisters, Marlene LaPalm, Maryann Steede; and brother, Richard Deno, of Michigan; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Vic requested cremation with a burial at sea, which will be scheduled at a later date.
