Sara Doris Ballweg

MOUNT HOREB, Wis. — Sara Doris (Farmer) Ballweg passed away on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020, at Beehive Homes of Mount Horeb, Wis. She was born on Sept. 7, 1942, in Door County, Wis., and spent the first 14 years of her life on Washington Island where her father was the island’s doctor. The family then moved to Sister Bay, Wis., where Sara graduated from Gibraltar High School in 1960. She continued her education and entered the medical field as a medical laboratory technologist, working at times for her father’s clinic in Sister Bay. Sara then moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where she worked at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.

Sara and Gary Ballweg were married on Aug. 10, 1973. They resided in Rock, Gladstone and Kipling, Mich., for 45 years before moving back to Wisconsin in 2018. Throughout her life in the U.P., Sara was involved in many governmental, civic, and religious organizations, both as a volunteer and a leader.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Edward C. and Ruby (Larson) Farmer and an infant sister.

Sara is survived by her husband of 46 years, Gary, of Black Earth, Wis. She is also survived by daughters, Amber Ballweg of Minnetonka, Minn., and Laura (John) McCormack, of Sheboygan, Wis.; as well as grandchildren, Joshua and Elizabeth McCormack; and her sister, Jane (James) Kane of Virginia. She is also survived by extended family and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff and owners of Beehive Homes of Mount Horeb where Sara has resided for the past year, as well as Agrace HospiceCare for their care. In addition, the family expresses much love and appreciation to family and friends for support over the past six years of Sara’s affliction with Alzheimer’s Disease.

A prayer service will be held at Gunderson Camacho Black Earth, 1710 Center St., Black Earth, on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday.
