William J. ‘Bill’ Lewis
ESCANABA — William J. “Bill” Lewis, 84, of Escanaba, passed away early Saturday morning, Dec. 7, 2019, at Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba.
He was born on July 6, 1935, in Escanaba, son of Mathew and Virginia (Lusardi) Lewis.
Bill graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in 1953. He served his country in the 312th Engineer Company honorably with pride in the U.S. Army Reserves.
He married Doris (Borman) Aug. 3, 1957, at St. Patrick Church in Escanaba.
Bill worked at Red Owl Stores as their produce manager, retiring in 1996. He also was employed at Clare Bedding for several years.
Bill and Doris took several beautiful trips — but loved their cabin on the Escanaba River and their camp in Northland when he enjoyed hunting with family and friends.
Bill and Doris have been very active at St. Anne’s Church serving on the parish council, service commission and as eucharistic ministers. They also chaired the St. Anne’s picnic for 19 years and were involved in many other areas serving their church. He loved his parish of St. Anne’s. They also tried to go to daily mass which was important to them. He thanked God for giving them a good life and friends.

Bill is survived by his wife, Doris of Escanaba; siblings, Eileen Andrews of Stephenson and sister-in-law, Ann Marie Lewis of Escanaba; sisters-in-law, Joyce (Bob) Heynssens of Gladstone and Linda (Harlan) Dalgord of Gladstone; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Mathew, Ken (Irene), Glen, Bob (Tess), Fran (Pat), and Don (Joyce).
In keeping with Bill’s wishes there will be no public visitation. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in the spring.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Gary Abrahamson Jr. Memory Care Home Program. Envelopes will be available at the church. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.
