Tom Marshall Judson III

ESCANABA — Tom Marshall Judson III, 83, of Escanaba, passed away Friday evening, Oct. 11, 2019, of natural causes with his hunting boots on. He was born on Dec. 14, 1935, in Escanaba, the son of Tom Marshall and Gertrude (Morey) Judson II. Tom was raised in Escanaba and was a member of the Escanaba High School Graduating Class of 1954 where he was part of the National Honor Society and also an excellent athlete who received the Herman Gessner Trophy. He went on to further his education at Michigan Tech University in Houghton, Mich. Tom returned to his hometown and worked for the City of Escanaba for a few years. He then was employed by Harnischfeger Corporation as a welder and machinist until his retirement in 1984. Tom married the former Madeline Mary Verbrigghe on June 22, 1957, in Perkins. Together, the couple shared 62 years of marriage and raised four children. Tom was a member of the UAW, Knights of Columbus, and was strong in his faith at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. He was an avid Detroit Tigers and Lions fan and enjoyed everything the outdoors had to offer — especially fishing and hunting. Tom always said he had the perfect childhood while growing up, as he would spend every summer at his grandmother’s with his cousins on the Escanaba River where they would play outside all day. He also had two moments in his life he was extremely proud of; the first was shooting a 17-point buck in the 1960s, and the second was shooting a hole in one at Woody’s Run Golf Course. Tom’s family meant the world to him and he loved them dearly. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be deeply missed.

Tom is survived by his wife, Madeline Judson of Escanaba; daughter, Laurie (Douglas) Copeland of Escanaba; sons, Bruce Judson of Escanaba, Mike (Angela) Judson of Pine Ridge, and Brian (Angie) Judson of Cornell; grandchildren, Nick (Paula) Judson, Courtney (Jack) Planakis, Marshall Judson, Ashley Rogers, Rachel Rogers, Jessica Judson, Brian Judson, Kaylee Judson, Matthew Judson, Brittany Judson, and Nathan Judson; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sister, June (Ken) Carlson of Wells; brother, David Judson of Tacoma, Wash.; sister-in-law, Beatrice Judson of Ford River; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Judson.
