Charles ‘Charlie’ Fritz

ESCANABA — Charles “Charlie” Fritz, 91, of Escanaba, passed away Tuesday evening Aug. 20, 2019 at the Oscar Johnson V.A. Medical Center in Iron Mountain. Charles had a long battle with cancer before it took him.

Charles was born in Ames, Iowa on June 8, 1937, son of Martin and Annabel (Shaffer) Fritz.

He enlisted in the Air Force in 1958 serving until his honorable discharge in 1962. He was a veteran of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

On Oct. 28, 1961 Charles married Mildred “Mitzie” McQuisten of Munising while stationed at K.I. Sawyer AFB.

Charles worked various jobs in Iowa, Downing Box Co., and UPS in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City before moving back to Michigan. He worked 12 years doing insurance inspections across the Upper Peninsula. He went to work for Michigan Works as computer tech and various other jobs before becoming Ford River ­Township’s township assessor for 16 years, before he retired.

Charles is survived by his son, Steve of Escanaba; siblings, Gary Fritz of Trinidad Texas, Lavern Fritz of Denver Colo., Marilyn Tordoff of Marshalltown, Iowa; and nieces and nephews in Michigan, Arkansas, Colorado and Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mildred and brother, Larry Fritz.

Graveside services with military rites will be held on Monday, Sept. 2, 2019 at 1 p.m. in Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
