Melba ‘Millie’ Young

GLADSTONE — Melba “Millie” Young, 90, of Gladstone, passed away surrounded by her family Sunday, June 30, 2019, at her daughter’s home in Rapid River.

Millie was born March 25,1929, in Cornell, the daughter of Mose and Viola (Couillard) LaCarte. She was the ninth child born to Mose and Viola (Couilliard) LaCarte. Before meeting and marrying George Young, she worked at St Francis Hospital and the local Busy Bee Cafe. She and George were married 69 years.

Millie was a devoted wife and mother to her three children, Sandy, Donna and Clifford. She worked hard her entire life maintaining her home and family. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t do from making the most delicious cinnamon rolls to rewiring a plug for a lamp. She took great pride in caring for her home; so much so that she took care of other families homes as if they were her own.

Throughout the years, she enjoyed the company of friends, bingo with the girls, traveling across the United States with George and friends, and her growing family of grandchildren.

Never having known her own mother who died before she was three, Millie focused on her own family. She cared for her husband until he passed in 2015.

It was with great love and thankfulness that her children cared for her until her passing. Thank you mom for teaching and showing us about love of family. We love you.

Millie is survived by: son, Clifford (Theresa) of Newberry, Mich.; two daughters, Donna (Gene) Folcik of Rapid River, Sandra St. John of Gladstone; six grandchildren, Jaclyn (Rob) Feller, Allison (Kevin) Desotelle, Rick (Heather) Folcik, Jenny (Jeff) Gerken, Cliffton (Lisa) Young and Dillon (Lori) Young; three step-grandchildren, Andrew (Lauren) and Eric (Molly) Feller and Danielle (Robert) Grochowski; 13 great-grandchildren, Zachary and Jacob Ward, Kole Desotelle; Adison, Mallory and Samuel Gerken, Masy and Kade Folcik, Ava and Parker Young; and two great-great-grandchildren; in-laws, Charles and Marcella McKosky, Mel and Nancy Young and Marilynn and Dennis Aicher; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Millie was preceded in death by: husband, George D. Young; four brothers, Edward, Ernest, Albert and Lawrence LaCarte; four sisters, Eva Gabrielson, Mae Delvaux, Lina Bitner, and Anna Skradski; son-in-law, Howard St. John, and one grandson, Christopher St. John; brothers and sisters in-law, Joyce (John) Mihalic, Elaine ( Lloyd) Forvilly and Clifford Young; mother and father in-law, Ben and Marie Young.

Family will receive friends Saturday, July 20, from 10 until 11 a.m. at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Gladstone. Memorial service will follow visiting hours at 11 a.m. with Pastor Cathy Rafferty officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.
