Julius P. Haelterman

HERMANSVILLE — Julius P. Haelterman, 98, of Hermansville, passed away on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 28, 2019, at Evergreen Meadows Assisted Living in Norway, Mich.

He was born on June 27, 1920, in Norway, son of Omer and Hortense (Smith) Haelterman.

Julius served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1946. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Army of Occupation Medal. For 28 years he was employed as a construction technician for the Michigan DOT, retiring on April 7, 1984.

Julius was a Mason and belonged to American Legion in Hermansville, serving as post commander multiple terms. He felt most at home in the outdoors..He was an avid fisherman, hunter and took many camping trips with his grandsons. Julius also loved golfing; getting his first hole-in-one in his eighties. Gardening was another of his passions continuing through his residency at Evergreen Meadows.

He was preceded in death by his son David.

He is survived by his daughter, Elaine (Dennis) Jensen of Canton, Ohio, son Edward (Jan) Haelterman of Hermansville, Mich., and daughter, Marilyn (Lennard) Mattson of Portage, Mich.; his grandchildren, Leanne (Darryl) Schumacher, David (Yadira) Jensen, Scott (Sue) Haelterman, Robert (Cathy) Haelterman, Edward Haelterman, Chris (Tracy) Haelterman, Michael Mattson and Lynette (Matt) Mattson. Great-grandchildren include: Rafael, Ginet, Emily, Nate, Taylor, Crystal, Dustin, Jordan, Carly, Brett, Alec, Emmanuel, Cristian, and Henry; great-great grandchildren; Harper, Lincoln, Lucas and Logan.

In keeping with Julius’ wishes, no services will be held. There will be a gathering for a celebration of life on June 29.
