Robert J. ‘Bob’ Johnson

ESCANABA — Robert J. “Bob” Johnson, 80, of Escanaba, passed away early Sunday morning, Feb. 10, 2019, at his home.

He was born on March 1, 1938, in Escanaba, son of Louis W. and Rose (LaCasse) Johnson. Bob graduated from Escanaba High School, class of 1957. He was a lifelong resident of Escanaba.

Bob served in the U.S. Army from 1963 until his honorable discharge in 1965. He was honored with a Good Conduct Medal.

On Jan. 8, 1966, Bob married the love of his life, Shirley “Toots” Besson in Gladstone.

Bob owned and operated Bob Johnson Insurance and Pine Tree Realty, retiring in 2017.

He enjoyed working in his garage and doing yard work and was an avid train collector. Bob was lifelong member of the Elks Lodge 354, Eagles Aerie 1088 and the Perkins American Legion.

Bob is survived by his wife, Shirley “Toots” of Escanaba; three daughters, Jackie (Don) Downs of Wasilla, Ark., Carol (Jess) Hahn of Asotin, Wash., and Hope (Dave Radloff) Rudden of Escanaba; five grandchildren, Josh Hahn, Jennifer Slee, Taylor Downs, Kimberlee Rudden and Karissa Rudden; four great-granddaughters, Ainsley, Avery, Evelyn and Charlee; sisters, Eileen (Mike) Hayward of Burbank, Ill., and Blanche Zawada of Springfield, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Johnson and Betty Johnson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Walter and Jim.

Visitation will be on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba concluding with military rites at 1 p.m. A gathering and meal will follow at the Elks Lodge 354.

Burial will take place in the Baldwin Twp. Cemetery in Perkins. Memorials may be directed to Bob’s family.
