Ida E. Kallio

TRENARY, Mich. — Ida E. Kallio, 90, of Trenary, entered eternal life Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, at the Eastwood Nursing Center in the loving care of her family.

Ida was born Sept. 11, 1928, in Trenary, a daughter of Paul and Jennie (Lindfors) Kallio, and was raised in Trenary. She graduated from the Mathias Township School in 1947, where she participated in basketball and cheerleading during her high school years. She then was employed in Waukegan, Ill., for a time. On Aug. 7, 1948, Ida was united in marriage to the love of her life, Floyd Kallio, in Escanaba. Over the next few years, the couple resided in Escanaba, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and finally Trenary where they raised their family. For many years, Floyd and Ida owned and operated Floyd’s Service, a combination gas station, car repair, and new and used car sales business. It was the only full service auto business in the area and Ida served as secretary and bookkeeper. Both Floyd and Ida were charter and active members of the First Lutheran Church in Trenary when the congregation reorganized, went from Finnish to an English speaking congregation, and established a permanent church building.

Throughout the years, Ida was an active member of the Women’s Guild of the First Lutheran Church, TOPS Club, Home Extension, belonged to several bowling teams, and was a charter member of the Trenary Lioness Club. Ida was very devoted to her husband, Floyd, possessed a very patient and agreeable personality, always greeting others with her sweet smile. In her leisure, she enjoyed reading and playing Solitaire. Ida also enjoyed collecting dolls of all kinds, and found special pleasure in letting and watching her grandchildren play with them.

Ida is survived by her children, Kristine Stine of Negaunee Township, Sally (Patrick) Manning of Escanaba, Paula (John) Souders of Sarasota, Fla., and Hope (Jerry Happel) Kallio of Three Rivers; her grandchildren, Marla (Matt) Rondeau, Keel (Shelley) Stine, Sarah (Daniel) Etelamaki, Emily (Tom) Massie, Daniel (fiancee, Amanda) Manning, Kevin Manning, Savannah Souders, Cody Souders, Brooke Krysiak, and Wade Krysiak; great-grandchildren, Beau, Jack, Maggie, and Juddson Rondeau, Xander, Zakery, Linkin, and Camber Stine, Kaya, Payne, Piper, and Dylan Etelamaki, Nina and Sylvia Massie. Also surviving are her brother, Lauri (Peggy) Kallio of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Ruth Ellsworth of Saginaw; and sister-in-law, Verna Kallio of Gwinn; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Ida was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; her son, Terry; sisters, Esther (the late Hans) Hallinen, Helen (the late Gus) Viton, Jennie (the late Bob) Bigga, and Impi (the late Edward) Moran; brothers, Art (the late Anna) Kallio and Donald Kallio; brother-in-law, Arnie Ellsworth; her in-laws, Anna (the late Glen) Maki, Viola Peterson, Irene (the late Ken) Wedell, Emily (the late Lloyd) Workingtine, and Glen (the late Ida) Kallio.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the First Lutheran Church in Trenary on Monday, Feb. 18, beginning at 10 a.m. until the time of service at noon. Rev. Rell Spickerman , pastor, will officiate. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Spring interment will be made in the Mathias Township Cemetery.
