Phyllis ‘Mickey’ Spera

KINGSFORD — Phyllis “Mickey” Spera, 93, died Monday, April 23, 2018 at Manorcare Health Services in Kingsford, Mich. She was born July 27, 1924, in Iron Mountain, the daughter of Arthur and Ann (Hagar) Frangquist. She attended Iron Mountain High School and upon graduating moved to Davenport, Iowa, to work at the Rock Island Arsenal during World War II.

She married Bernard “Barney” Spera on Dec. 29, 1945, and they had three children — Kay, Art and Sally.

Mickey was a meter maid in the 1960s for the Iron Mountain Police Department. She also worked as CNA at the Dickinson County Hospital, part owner of a men’s clothing store in Escanaba and a bookkeeper.

She loved doing crafts and especially coloring in her later years. She was an avid collector with extensive stamp, business card and matchbook collections. She was a member of ABATE of Michigan and loved attending Bike Night with her family and friends.

She is survived by her son, Art, and daughter, Sally (Charles) Way. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Melissa (Eric) Mathias, Stacey (Gordon) Stone, Corey Way, Gabriel Spera and Caitlin Spera and by her great-grandchildren, Grace Mathias, Logan Mathias, Brynn Way-Lanala, Raelynn Raisanen, Gage Stone, Avianna Way and Amala Way and many nieces and nephews.

Mickey was preceded in death by her husband Barney, daughter Kay, sister Evryll Bourdeau and brother-in-law Carrol “Mickey” Bourdeau.
