Marvin K. Manninen
CORNELL — Marvin K. Manninen, 81, of 11846 County Road SA in Cornell (Watson) passed away Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016 at his home in Watson surrounded by his loving family. He was born Jan. 23, 1935 in Watson, Mich. and was the son of Edwin and Jenny (Kelloniemi) Manninen.
Marvin attended school in Watson and graduated from Gwinn High School in 1952. After high school he sailed on the Great Lakes with the Merchant Marines and then served in the U.S. Army until he was honorably discharged.
Marvin Kenneth Manninen married the former Patricia Irene Trenary on June 25, 1960 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Flat Rock. Marvin was employed with the Michigan Department of Transportation doing survey work for 13 years and then as a draftsman for highway design until his retirement in 1981. He was a founding member of the Wells Township volunteer fire department, served on the Wells Township School Board, was a member of the State of Michigan Retiree Association, and enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and wood working making bird feeders and doll furniture for his granddaughters.
Marvin K. Manninen is survived by: wife, Patricia; children, Edwin Manninen of Richmond, Mich.,
Coleen (John) Travis of Sheboygan, Wis., Karen (Larry) Hughes of Flat Rock, and Mark (Barb) Manninen of Escanaba; four grandchildren, Jeremy Hughes, Ryan Hughes, Crystal Manninen and Sophia Manninen; three great-grandchildren, Landen, Jaelyn and Emma Hughes; brother, John (Marilyn) Manninen of Watson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by father, Edwin Manninen; mother, Jenny Manninen Maki; step-father, Arnold Maki; sisters, Dorothy Swalin and Lorraine Derryberry.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Marvin K. Manninen will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Anderson Funeral Home with Father Fran DeGroot officiating. Veteran’s services will be conducted following the funeral services at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services in the St. Anne Catholic Church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
