Kim ‘Chief’ Papineau

ESCANABA – Kim “Chief” Papineau, 65, of Escanaba, passed away Wednesday afternoon, March 9, 2016, at Marquette General Hospital.

Chief was born Dec. 2, 1950, in Escanaba, the son of Leonard and Joyce (Nedeau) Papineau. He was a 1969 graduate of Escanaba High School and worked at Harnischfeger Corporation for many years. Chief’s passion for fishing was beyond the norm. He was instrumental in the Bay de Noc Great Lakes Sports Fisherman Club and won numerous awards and tournaments in the MWC and PWT circuits throughout the nation. A “Fisher among Men,” Chief was a mentor to many anglers, and in good ole competitive fashion, was the one to try and beat. In 2001, Chief received the prestigious “Storm” Angler of the Year. In addition to fishing, he enjoyed hunting and spending time outdoors in the Watson area.

“Until we meet again one day, Upon God’s golden sand, We’ll picture you no other way, Than with a pole in hand.” He will be deeply missed.

In addition to his mother, Joyce (Jack) Picard, Chief is survived by daughters, Lisa (Kevin) Beem and Kimberly (Scott) Peterson, both of Escanaba; brothers, Terry (Cindy) Papineau, Brent (Donna) Papineau and Don (Amy) Picard, all of Escanaba; sisters, Belinda Finlan of Escanaba, Lori Picard of Green Bay, Wis., and Debbie (Jeff) Couper of Iron Mountain; and grandchildren, Allison, Bridget, Bryant, Lindsey and Amanda.

Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Chief was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Papineau, and brother, Timothy Papineau.

Chief’s family will receive friends on Monday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Skradski Family Funeral Home in Escanaba. Closing prayers will follow visiting hours at 6 p.m. A gathering will follow and will be announced at the conclusion of closing prayers.
