John M. Bergman

RAPID RIVER – Long-term attorney John M. Bergman, 66, of Maywood Shores, Rapid River, passed away on April 27, 2015, at his home with his son John by his side. He was born on April 6, 1949, in Lansing, and was the son of Milton M. and Gladys L. (Eggert) Bergman, both of whom preceded him in death.

John graduated from East Lansing High School in 1967. He continued his education at Michigan State University, College of Arts and Letters, graduating in 1971. In 1974, John graduated from Wayne State University Law School and was admitted into practice in the State of Michigan that same year.

On June 16, 1973, John married the former Barbara A. Oberg at Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid River. She preceded him in death on May 10, 1994. There was one child of the union, John M.A. Bergman, who is also a local attorney.

John was a member and Past Master of Delta Lodge 195 Free & Accepted Masons, member and Past High Priest of Delta Chapter 118 Royal Arch Masons, member of Hiawatha Council of Royal and Select Masters, member and Past Commander of Escanaba Commandery of Knights Templar, member and Past Potentate of Ahmed Shrine, and member and Past Director of Royal Order of Jesters Upper Peninsula Court 180.

He is survived by his son, John M.A. Bergman; sister, Carolyn A. Calender of Bellevue, Mich.; niece, Karen (Mike) Dupree of Lincoln Park, Mich.; and nephew, Kurt A. Calender of Irving, Texas. He is also survived by his father-in-law, Robert Oberg of Rapid River; sister-in-law, Christina Bach of Lake Villa, Ill., and her three children, Greta, Laura, and Ed (Megan) Bach.

In addition to his father Milton, mother Gladys, and wife Barbara, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law Ann Darrell (Hews) Oberg, brother-in-law James Calender, and nephew Kevin Calender.

There will be no public visitation. A private service will be held for family and close friends. Burial will take place in the Rapid River Cemetery. The Anderson Funeral Homes of Escanaba and Gladstone are assisting the Bergman Family.
