SAULT STE. MARIE -- On the 64th anniversary of the opening of the International Bridge between the “twin Saults” of Michigan and Ontario, administration is rolling back the toll to 1960s prices.

The bridge opened to traffic on Halloween 1962. Today, the toll for a small passenger vehicle -- car, light duty truck or motorcycle -- to cross is $4.70. For 24 hours only, authorities announced, the toll will roll back to the original 1962 price.

“From midnight to midnight on Oct. 31, passenger vehicle tolls at the bridge will get a historical throwback to a rate of $1.50 (US), reflecting the toll charged in the mid-1960s. The Canadian rate will be $2 (CA),” read a statement from the Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Authority.

"This is an opportunity to recognize and support the communities we share," said Director Peter Petäinen. "We're going back to opening prices to recognize the longstanding connection between the two Saults, making the bridge more accessible on both sides of the border. The bridge is here, as we have been since 1962, and we're proud to continue supporting that important link for both Saults equally, now and into the future."

The bridge has facilitated more than 107 million crossings since its opening 64 years ago, the authority reports. On average, about 1,900 million vehicles cross the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge every year.
