Mackinac Bridge closed

This photo captured by the Mackinac Bridge Authority from its camera located at the administration building in St. Ignace, looking south towards the Mighty Mac, shows a view obscured by fog. The bridge is presently closed due to dangerous falling ice.

Any Yoopers planning to head downstate or expecting a visit from those below the bridge will have to wait or find another route.

As of 3:30 p.m. Thursday, the Mackinac Bridge is closed to all traffic due to hazardous ice falling from the bridge cables and towers.

There is no expected schedule for reopening.

On Wednesday, the bridge was closed due to wintry, white-out conditions but reopened later in the day.

The Mackinac Bridge Authority is monitoring the conditions at various points along the structure, and will post any updates on their website.

When conditions improve, the bridge will be reopened to traffic.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the bridge area to allow maintenance vehicles to operate and wait for the bridge to reopen before approaching. If you are in the Straits area, please tune to AM 530 and 1610 for updates. Text “MacBridge” to 67283 to receive notification of the bridges reopening.

Starting at $3.50/week.
