Uncontested school boards

Candidates "win" by default in many area districts

UPPER PENINSULA -- With uncontested races dotting ballots around the Upper Peninsula, several local school boards had open positions that will be filled with everyone who got on the ballot. Other seats remain open.

In the Bark River-Harris district, voters were directed to vote for “not more than three” school board members. The only three to choose from were Mark Erickson, Shellie Massie and Mia Smith.

Manistique Area Schools had one position open, and the only person who ran was Nichole Drouin.

In Marquette County’s Wells Township, where the school board term is six years, the two to run for the two open seats were Sandra Holmes and BillieJean Horrocks.

Stephenson Area Public Schools had four openings. Four candidates signed up: Don Cugini, Melissa Mathews, Adam J. Olson and Barbara Zahorik.

In Rapid River, there were three openings, and just two individuals were on the ballot -- Jake Denkins and Ashley Harris.

Menominee Area Public Schools faces a similar situation; the partial term will go to Bobbi Jasurda, and Cindy Woods will take one of the two four-year seats.

North Central Area Schools had two available board member positions, but no one on the ballot.

Zero people submitted intent to run for the partial term on the Big Bay de Noc school district board, but five ran for the four full-term seats. The results of that race are expected to be in Thursday’s Daily Press.

If write-in candidates end up filling any of the open positions, the Press will aim to publish those names as soon as possible.
