Phoebe Sarnowski performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a bluetooth-connected dummy while Lisa Casey, emergency medical technician and American Heart Association instructor, observes the digital readings on a tablet. Sarnowski, currently a junior at Escanaba High School, intends to pursue nursing and/or radiology after graduation. She took the class, held at Bay College, to get CPR certified — and passed along with others who also took the course with Casey. The benefit of the modern, high-tech dummies is that digital readings count exactly the depth, timing and number of compressions and breaths so that students know if they've done a sufficient job.
