ESCANABA -- A contract aimed at drawing more indigent defense attorneys to the area is among several items on the Delta County Board of Commissioners' agenda for its regular meeting tonight.

The board’s regular meeting will be held at 5:15 p.m. in the boardroom at the Delta County Service Center, 2920 College Ave.

Delta County has chosen to regionalize Michigan Indigent Defense Commission (MIDC) services for fiscal year 2027.

The contract to be discussed tonight is between Iron Defense, doing business as Superior Defense -- a Michigan non-profit corporation -- and Iron County. Dickinson and Delta Counties are considered participants in the multi-agency fiduciary agreement for criminal defense services, and their obligations are detailed in the contract.

If approved, Delta County would open a local public defense office staffed by three full-time attorneys and a full-time legal assistant, providing a consistent and stable defense team dedicated to serving the county.

In March, the board approved a letter of support for the regionalization model before submitting the letter to the MIDC as part of a fiscal year 2027 grant application, which was approved.

In other business, commissioners are expected to:

-- Consider a resolution in support of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide initiative from Nov. 4 to Nov. 11 each year. The initiative aims to encourage counties, businesses and residents to display green lights to show support for veterans and raise awareness of the challenges they face during the transition from military to civilian life. The Delta County Veteran Services office is requesting the board pass the supportive resolution.

-- Consider approval of the 2027 Delta County Parks Policy and Regulations Manual, as requested by the Delta County Parks and Recreation Commission and Parks Manager Heather LeDuc.

-- Review the 2026 Final Draft Solar Ordinance Amendment to the current Delta County Zoning Ordinance. The draft was approved by the Delta County Planning Commission on Oct. 5, and it was submitted to commissioners for final adoption. A public hearing was held on the issue on April 13 earlier this year. The ordinance details Solar Energy Systems (SES), utility-scale SES requirements, utility solar energy production and more.
