HYDE -- A car crash at the intersection of U.S. 2 and I Road barely into the morning hours on Sunday led to one death, one arrested and treated for injuries, and another hospitalized.

At approximately 12:40 a.m. on Sunday -- which some may think of as Saturday night -- deputies from the Delta County Sheriff's Office and other agencies responded to a two-vehicle collision in Hyde. The call reported that a vehicle was on fire and occupants were entrapped.

“Upon arrival, deputies discovered a truck was traveling on I Road and failed to stop for the intersection at U.S. 2, striking a passenger car traveling on U.S. 2,” read a statement form the sheriff’s office, which was released Monday afternoon.

The deputies determined that an 18-year-old female passenger was ejected from the truck during the crash; she was later found deceased. The 18-year-old male driver of the car that was struck was transported to the hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. The alleged driver of the truck in which the young woman had been passenger fled the scene on foot. He was later identified as 18-year-old Rielee Joseph Kobs.

A multi-agency search for the missing driver lasted throughout the morning. Finally, after a caller reported seeing a person run from the woodline into the water under a bridge on I Road, responders located Kobs around 8:40 a.m. under a bridge. The young man was treated for injuries and was lodged at the Delta County Jail.

Kobs has been arraigned on charges of reckless driving causing death, reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function and two counts of failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death. Bond has been set at $250,000.00. The crash remains under investigation.

Assisting the Delta County Sheriff's Office were the Michigan State Police, Menominee County Sheriff's Office, Hannahville Tribal Police, Escanaba Public Safety, Ford River Fire Department, Escanaba Fire, Rampart and Delta County Victim Services, the sheriff’s release stated.
