ESCANABA -- The Stonehouse is reopening.
The greater Escanaba community has missed the corner restaurant since December 2024, when a raging fire destroyed the building.
Almost two years later, a new structure has been erected at 2223 Ludington St., and its doors have opened to customers.
Now with infrastructure online and permits filed, the Stonehouse’s official opening with regular hours is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 5. Some patrons got their first tastes from the new kitchen a few days ago; this past week, the Stonehouse offered a limited menu in the lounge.
Even before any building began, the business found a way to bring food to its loyal fanbase by operating a food truck in the leveled parking lot.
“The local community has been a huge support to our family ever since the tragedy,” says the restaurant’s website at stonehouseescanaba.com. “We are looking forward to seeing and serving you all once again with the same consistently awesome food and excellent service. You will see many familiar faces in the kitchen, dining room and bar as many of our great employees are returning.”
The new building reflects the previous Stonehouse character, including a recreation of the front entrance, while modernizing certain aspects, such as including handicapped restrooms, Starr Romps told the Press earlier this summer.
John and Matthew Romps, sons of Starr and John Romps Sr., are now the primary owners of the Stonehouse and Delta Beverage, Inc. The restaurant has been in the family since 1982.
