GLADSTONE -- A house fire on the bluff in Gladstone very early Tuesday morning appears to have been caused by lightning, authorities say.

At approximately 1:45 a.m., Gladstone Public Safety responded to reports of a possible structure fire at 53 Tipperary Rd. in the Irish Oaks Estates subdivision. Occupants had safely exited before firefighters reached the burning home.

“Upon arrival, officers discovered the residence filled with smoke and observed flames coming through floor vents,” read a release from the Gladstone Public Safety Department, issued Wednesday.

“Firefighters extinguished the fire and successfully contained it to the area of origin, preventing further spread,” the release stated. “A subsequent investigation indicated that the fire was caused by a nearby lightning strike.”

Several other agencies responded the to incident in addition to Gladstone Public Safety. The Escanaba Township Volunteer Fire Department, Gladstone Volunteer Fire Department, Gladstone Electrical Department, DTE Energy and Rampart EMS all assisted at the scene.
