Escanaba celebrates National Friends of Libraries Week

ESCANABA -- The Escanaba Public Library is inviting the community to discover seasonal reading and the year-round work that keeps our library thriving. The Friends of the Escanaba Public Library (FEPL) announced Monday a week-long celebration for the 21st Annual National Friends of Libraries Week, October 18-24, 2026 -- a national celebration coordinated by United for Libraries that honors the volunteers, advocates, and book-lovers who make libraries possible.
People do not read the same way in January as they do in June. Books have weather. Some are winter books -- interior, slow, demanding a kind of stillness that only the short days make available. Others are written in summer light, reckless and expansive. And the transitional seasons -- that particular melancholy of October, the restless anticipation of March -- call for books that understand threshold moments. That is the practice the FEPL are bringing to life during National Friends of Libraries Week.
Celebrate and Support the National Friends of Libraries Week is a two-fold opportunity: to celebrate FEPL and to raise awareness of how they support the library. The FEPL fund programs, book sales, children’s reading initiatives, and special projects that fall outside the library’s regular budget. Memberships, donations, and volunteer hours directly shape what the library can offer. The FEPL are the reason the Escanaba Public Library can say yes to more. More programs, more books, more welcoming spaces for every season of a reader’s life. Community members can join or renew FEPL membership during the week, volunteer, or simply stop by to learn how friends groups sustain libraries nationwide. All events are free and open to the public at the Escanaba Public Library.
The Friends of the Escanaba Public Library is a nonprofit volunteer organization that began in 1988 and is dedicated to supporting and advocating for the Escanaba Public Library through fundraising, programming, and community engagement. Proceeds from book sales and memberships directly benefit library collections and programs for all ages.
