MANISTIQUE -- The North American Hill Sheep Show is coming to Manistique this weekend to the Schoolcraft County Fair Building. The fair will start Friday with events and entertainment through Sunday.
Friday and Saturday, the event will open at 9 a.m. and end at 9 p.m.; on Sunday, it will start at 9 a.m. and end at 3 p.m.
The NA Hill Sheep Show will feature a UK-style sheep show. Unlike 4-H shows more commonly seen in the area, a UK-style show favors a natural presentation of sheep, all together in one pen, as opposed to slick shorn, haltered and posed individually. According to the NA Hill Sheep Show's website, "This is a sheep show with commercial producers in mind! Commercial shepherds do not need to be worried about halter training, slick shearing, or posing American 4-H style."
There will be multiple shows for different breeds and show classes. Judges are being flown in from across the United Kingdom for the event. The sheep shows will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with an awards ceremony at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
The show will also have a number of other activities for attendees to enjoy. There will be craft vendors set up and open every day in the Little Bear West Arena. There will be shearing and sheep dog demonstrations throughout the event and a talk on British wool management on Saturday from a member of the Historic British Wool Board.
Other notable events that will transpire are a farm-to-table dinner on Friday, a live musical performance Friday night, a ladies' tea event on Saturday and a free movie showing Saturday evening.
General admission to the show and its events is free, with the one exception being the farm-to-table dinner, which may have already sold out at the time of publication.
The weekend's events will conclude on Sunday with a sheep parade through downtown Manistique at 3 p.m.
