“Pretty potty” about a week from opening

ESCANABA — The restroom building recently erected at the Municipal Dock received some beautification this week, but it’s not quite ready to open and won’t be ready for use on Labor Day.
The work should be completed within the next week; Escanaba Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Kent Dubord estimated an opening day of Sept. 14.
The City of Escanaba opened up bids for the project to design and build a new public restroom facility at the location in February of this year. Cross General Contracting of Munising was awarded the job, and after a design period, construction began in June.
The restrooms accompany other development in the downtown; a new wastewater lift station and new infrastructure beneath Ludington Street were also completed recently.
The new facility may look ready, but as of Thursday afternoon, “the restrooms need a final electrical inspection, restoration work, and gutter installation,” Dubord said.
The city purchased trees and shrubs from Northwoods Nursery in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, where the city has an account, shared Karen Moore, city council member as well as president of Enhance Escanaba. On Thursday morning, Enhance Escanaba -- the nonprofit organization whose aim it is to promote, restore and beautify the town -- met with other volunteers and DPW workers at the site to plant the greenery around the sides of the new structure, making it what some Enhance members called a “pretty potty.”
Portable restrooms will be available at the Municipal Dock during the Labor Day festivities, which are scheduled to take place on Monday.
