ESCANABA — The community is again preparing for the annual Senior Expo, an event organized by the Daily Press as a means to provide information and a meal to senior citizens for only the cost of one canned food item each.
The event is scheduled to occur on Sept. 29, a Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Highland Golf Club and will feature a special performance by the remnants barbershop Chorus. In some previous years, the expo was held at the Ruth Butler Building on the Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds, but the Highland has shown to serve as a more appropriate venue for this particular event.
Speakers at the senior expo will discuss topics that may be of interest to seniors. On the docket, in order of appearance, are:
Dr. Andrew Pap from UP Health System to talk about aortic stenosis and coronary disease management; Cindy Gengron from Lakehouse Senior Living on the right time to move; Dr. Amanda Bruemmer from OSF St. Francis Hospital on the subject of seniors can talk with their loved one’s about their medical wishes; Community Action Agency Executive Director Gary Willoughby; Amy Fudala from the Delta Area Transit Authority (DATA); Attorney Jacob D. Lynch, who specializes in elder law; Medicare Specialist Megan Richer with Taylor, Lord and Hughes Insurance Agency; a large team from Skradski Family Funeral Homes — including Pancake the dog — primarily to speak on the topic of funeral pre-planning; and Gayle DeShambo from the Delta County Cancer Alliance (DCCA). DeShambo, Board President for DCCA, will also emcee the event.
Lunch will be provided by the Highland Golf Club. Door prizes will be drawn throughout the event.
While the cost of admission is only one non-expired shelf-stable food item — such as a can of soup or boxed rice — space is limited, so people must collect tickets from the Daily Press prior to the event. The office is open from
