ESCANABA -- Smartphone users can now turn their screen time into support for adoptable dogs at the Delta Animal Shelter (DAS) through a mobile app, which is hosting a contest for the month of August.
The Treat Shelter Contest, which runs throughout August, awards prizes to shelters that recruit the most new app users. Participants download the app using a shelter’s unique link, select one of that shelter’s adoptable dogs and complete games and activities within the app.
Every new player who joins through the DAS’ link counts toward the shelter’s score in the contest. The first-place shelter will receive up to $2,500 worth of supplies from its wish list, while second and third place will receive 500 and 250 cans of puppy or cat food.
According to Treat, users’ gameplay earns treats, meals, toys and medical supplies that are shipped to participating shelters through Chewy every four to seven days.
Users can also receive notifications when the dog they selected is adopted and can learn more about visiting, fostering or adopting animals from their chosen shelter.
Shelter staff said participation in the app also benefits the organization’s pet food pantry, which provides free pet food assistance to Delta County residents.
"Not only is Treat fun and free to play, you are impacting the lives of real shelter dogs waiting for homes. Another great part of playing Treat is that it keeps our Food Pantry full so we can continue to give free food assistance to Delta County residents," shelter staff said.
In addition to helping shelter animals, users receive notifications when the real dog they selected is adopted.
The Copper Country Humane Society in Houghton has also partnered with the app and is participating in the contest.
