ESCANABA -- The Escanaba City Council will convene this evening to discuss a property abatement, extending the interim city manager agreement and funding for playgrounds in the city.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday at City Hall, 410 Ludington St., Room C101.
According to the council agenda, Escanaba Code Enforcement is requesting council members approval to authorize the city attorney to file suit in the Delta County 47th Circuit Court against property owners residing on South 4th Street to abate property maintenance code violations -- blight and fill below grade spaces.
This most recent request comes after the council authorized the city attorney to file suit in the 47th Circuit Court against another Escanaba resident to abate property maintenance code violations (blight) occurring on their property on South 12th Street during their Aug. 6 meeting.
Code Enforcement officers patrol the city in an effort to ensure that residences are kept in compliance with the city’s Property Maintenance Codes. Citations can be issued for unused vehicles rusting in backyards, accumulation of rubbish, overgrown grass and more, though residents are typically issued a warning -- or multiple -- before a citation is issued.
More information on the city's Property Maintenance Codes can be found on the "Code Compliance" page of the city's website.
In other business, the council will:
-- Consider the Escanaba Public Works Department's request to approve $97,588.62 in city funding for the purchase of two new playground structures and the installation of three new playgrounds through a community build at 21st Street and 18th Avenue South Park.
-- Consider the Escanaba Water Department's request to retain the services of FDS Engineering & Electrical Services of Iron Mountain for Water Plant SCADA Improvements in an amount not to exceed $3,900.
-- Consider the Escanaba Wastewater Department's request to purchase the Sewer Truck of America 900-ECO 12-yard Combination Sewer Cleaner from Sewer Equipment Co. of America, of Dixon, Illinois, at a cost not to exceed $373,591.44 after the trade in value of $225,000 for the department's old sewer truck.
-- Consider the Escanaba Electric Department's request to purchase 80 streetlight poles to replace the steel poles along US-2 for $212,320.
