Delta County voters approve recycling millage

ESCANABA -- Delta County voters on Tuesday approved the Delta County recycling, composting and hazardous waste millage renewal, according to unofficial results from enhancedvoting.com.
The proposal renews 0.297 mills for a 10-year period that will continue to help fund the recycling program, household hazardous waste program and composting at Delta Wide Recycling, located at the Delta County Landfill. The renewed millage previously expired in 2025.
For a home with a taxable value of $100,000, the millage will cost about $29.70 per year, or roughly $2.50 per month.
67.96% of Delta County residents voted yes to the renewal, with 6,648 votes. 32.04% of Delta County voters were opposed to the millage renewal, with 3,134 votes.
Within the different voting methods, 6,151 voted on election day, while 3,387 voted absentee and 244 were early, in-person voters.
Over the last decade, the millage has helped raise a portion of the money needed to operate the current programs at the facility. The renewal will allow for the programs to continue.
The renewal will help continue existing recycling operations, composting services -- including grass, leaves, branches and small tree limbs -- and household hazardous waste collection for the safe disposal of items like paint, batteries, electronics, chemicals, fluorescent bulbs and more.
The Delta Solid Waste Management Authority (DSWMA) oversees the Delta County Landfill, located at 5701 19th Ave. N., and houses the Delta Wide Recycling center and compost site.
Prior to its renewal, the millage generated about $475,000 annually for DSWMA programs and has helped fund a portion of the center’s operating costs over the past decade.
Recycling in the county is handled by the DSWMA, which manages the garbage dump and compost site as well as recycling services.
