CHIPPEWA COUNTY — The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Taskforce (TRIDENT), arrested a Bay Mills resident on Wednesday in an alleged connection with the overdose death of a young man last August.

On Aug. 9, 2025, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department responded to a local hotel in reference to a possible overdose. A young man was reportedly found deceased at the scene along with several illicit Fentanyl pills and other evidence.

According to a news release, TRIDENT was requested to assist and started their investigation. An autopsy was then conducted, which showed the cause of death to be acute Fentanyl poisoning.

On Wednesday, the Chippewa Co Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop in conjunction with TRIDENT detectives and arrested the driver as a result of the death investigation.

“These types of investigations are very time-consuming, complex and require significant investigative effort,” the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office said. “The dedication, persistence and diligent work of the TRIDENT investigators over the course of this investigation were instrumental in bringing this case to its current resolution.”
