ESCANABA -- A fast-paced canine competition will take center stage this weekend as Escanaba hosts the 14th Annual U.P. Shelter Fundraiser, sanctioned by the North American Flyball Association (NAFA).
The fundraiser will feature a flyball tournament at the U.P. State Fairgrounds' Miracle of Life Pavilion on Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m. each day. A lunch break is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m.
According to NAFA, the tournament is being co-hosted by two accredited flyball teams: Rude Dogs of Burton, Michigan, and High Velocity of Dalbo, Minnesota.
Known as one of the fastest-paced canine sports, flyball is a relay race where teams of four dogs compete head-to-head to complete a course as quickly as possible. In each race, dogs leap over hurdles, retrieve a tennis ball from a spring-loaded box and race back to tag the next teammate.
Teams from across the country are expected to compete in the event this weekend.
In addition to the tournament, the fundraiser will include bucket raffles and a bake sale. Proceeds will benefit the Delta Animal Shelter in Escanaba and the Eva Burrell Animal Shelter in Manistique.
Vonnie Bruce, Delta Animal Shelter operations coordinator, said the event will be fun for the whole family.
“Flyball is a fun and fast-paced event, and it is free! Such a great way to support some local animal shelters and entertain the whole family,” Bruce said.
